How you can help Believe in Ohio obtain funding for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years

The Believe in Ohio program was developed to provide Ohio’s high school and middle school teachers and students with the resources, tools and incentives needed to help prepare today’s students for the challenges and opportunities they will experience in the future.

Believe in Ohio (BiO) was funded by the 130th General Assembly and successfully implemented during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years, however, program funding ran out at December 31, 2016.  As a result, BiO has launched a campaign to request that the State of Ohio restore funding for the program for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years. This is how the state funding process will work for us:

1.    On February 8, 2017, House Bill 49 (HB49) was introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives.  HB49 is Ohio’s Biennial Budget which includes the two years ended June 30, 2018 and 2019.

2.    Beginning February 21, members of the House may propose Amendments to HB49. At that time, Rep. Kristina Roegner and Rep. Marlene Anielski plan to introduce an Amendment to HB49 - GRF 235523 Youth STEM Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Program (which is the official name of the Believe in Ohio program.)  During February and March, we anticipate that many other Representatives will show their support by also introducing the same Amendment to HB49.

3.    During February and March, Believe in Ohio is asking its supporters across Ohio to send emails of support to the following:  (Elsewhere on this page we describe how you too can show support.)

4.    Later, in April, after the House debates and votes on HB49 (hopefully with our Amendment included), HB49 will go over to the Ohio Senate for their debate and approval.

5.    Still later, in May or June, after the Senate debates, amends and votes on HB 49, it goes first to the House to reconcile any differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill.  Then it goes to Governor Kasich to sign HB49 (the Budget) into law

TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO HELP BELIEVE IN OHIO OBTAIN STATE FUNDING:

1.    Send an email of support that is addressed to all three of the following addresses:

  • Ohio Dept. of Education Superintendent, Mr. Paolo DeMaria:  superintendent@education.ohio.gov
  • Ohio Dept. of Higher Education Chancellor, Mr. John Carey:  chancellor@highered.ohio.gov
  • The email address:  Support@BelieveInOhio.org
  • When you write your email, include your name, relationship to the BiO program (teacher, student, parent, competition judge, STEM Forum speaker, etc.) and the school or business or organization you are associated with.
  • Also make sure you properly describe what you want them to support:   Amendment to HB49 - GRF 235523 Youth STEM Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Program

2.    Ask your House Representative to Co-Sponsor the Believe in Ohio Funding Amendment:  Amendment to HB49 - GRF 235523 Youth STEM Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Program. Here’s how:

  • Find out who the Representative is in the town in which you live at www.ohiohouse.gov
  • Click here to see and download a PDF copy of the actual Amendment
  • Either include the above link in your email or attach a PDF copy of the Amendment to your email
  • When you write your email, include your name, relationship to the BiO program (teacher, student, parent, competition judge, STEM Forum speaker, etc.) and the school or business or organization you are associated with.
